Call for Submissions for World AIDS Day/Day With(out) Art Exhibition!

VIH, Montréal

The VAV Gallery and the Concordia University Community Lecture Series on HIV/AIDS are currently seeking submission of film and video work by Concordia Undergraduate Students on issues related to HIV/AIDS, sexual identity, memory, and intergenerational communication within the queer community.

In 1984, British video artist Stuart Marshall debuted the video installation, Journal of the Plague Year at Galerie Optica, Montreal – a work which boldly reacted to the homophobic response of international media to the AIDS crisis. In the wake of the AIDS, gay male identity was vehemently pathologized by both mainstream media and the medical establishment in the UK and North America. Marshall’s work sought to counterpose representations of gay identity from both the public and private sphere to demonstrate the struggle over the meanings of homosexuality.

To celebrate World AIDS Day and the Day With(out) Art 2016, the VAV Gallery and the Concordia University Community Lecture Series on HIV/AIDS will restore Journal of the Plague Year and house the work in conversation with a selection of video work by Concordia Fine Arts Students.

The exhibition will invite viewers to reflect on the changing contexts of HIV/AIDS, thinking through how the pandemic, the discourses which surround it, and the communities it impacts have developed since the onset of the AIDS crisis. The exhibition will also highlight the role of cultural production within this process of understanding and confronting HIV/AIDS.
